Pattern Review: Judy Dress by Notch.

TL; DR – Fabric matters, also make sure you have big enough pieces.

From my local buy-nothing group, I got these large(ish) pieces of fabric that were used as table clothes at a wedding. They were grey with white polka-dots, grey and white stripes, and navy checkered. They are 100% cotton, but of the heavier variety. I’ve wanted to do something with the grey polka-dots for a while, and decided that I was finally going to try the Judy dress from Notch. Technically, it’s a dress and top and skirt, but I was only interested in the dress.

Of course, I cut every single pattern piece except the largest, revealing that there wasn’t a piece of the fabric long enough for the front pieces. So, as you can probably see from the photo, I had to sew two pieces together to have enough fabric. Why not, right? I was also trying out my new sewing machine (electronic!) that I got from my MIL.

Anyway, the pattern came together easily enough once I got over myself and figured out the illustrations. The fabric is WAY too heavy for this dress, and the ties weigh a ton and nothing really drapes. HOWEVER, I don’t hate the way the dress looks, and it will be nice for fall, or to. be given away in our buy-nothing group, I haven’t quite decided.

I still have yards and yards (in pieces) of the fabric so I can make something else, and some lighter fabric to make the Judy again. Not a win, but not a total loss either. Somewhere in between. A tie? I guess a tie, then.
